-- With funding support from the Transparent Fish Fund, Orphan Impact opened our new headquarters this past week in Ho Chi Minh City. The space was developed to help us further our 2-year strategic development plan including: volunteer recruitment, teacher training, corporate fundraising, and a centrally-located, fun, bright, open space for lots of team collaboration. She melted our hearts 2 years ago when she was interviewed on camera by the San Jose Mercury News and answered, "I want to help other children like me" when asked about her hopes for the future. Happy Birthday, Thao! (This post was written on 3/3)

-- Oftentimes we share exciting news or upcoming events. But the day-to-day activities, that have become the norm, are pretty exciting as well. Each week, 17 classes are planned and executed by the team of Orphan Impact teachers. The photos shown here are from this week's Thursday night class in Can Tho. -- Long joined the Orphan Impact team as a Lead Teacher in October 2010. Over these past 2.5 years he has developed many new skills helping to dramatically impact his classroom management and the success he is seeing with his students. He does a great job of engaging his students as they use computers and internet to learn more about the world around them. This year, Long has also taken on the role of Operations Manager. From equipment to budget to schedules to teacher development, Long keeps us organized and helps us to be continually improving....thus increasing our impact! Thank you, Long. (This is the 2nd of a 20-post series that will be posted by Orphan Impact from March 1 to December 31 as we provide feedback to the East Villagers community about how we utilize the $20,000 in funding support we received from Chao Foundations/Transparent Fish Fund).
We "broke ground" this week on the new site that will soon become the headquarters of the Orphan Impact operations in Vietnam. Following a month of bid collecting and price shopping, we selected the architectural design firm of Saigon Eco Construction to represent us in renovating and designing our offices. The firm was incredibly gracious to offer their services to Orphan Impact free-of-charge because of "how impressed they were with our unique way of helping Vietnamese orphan children to prepare for their futures." We are thrilled to have such an amazing company helping us ensure that our space is purpose-built and designed to meet our needs and our goals. Just over 8 months ago, we cancelled the lease on our previous offices so that we could put the $350/month of savings to better use in the orphanages with who we are partnering. We moved our offices into my apartment - cramming desks, computers, projectors, whiteboards, and far too many miscellanous computer parts, cords, and wires into a small spare bedroom. While our staff has been gracious, I know they were growing weary of continually feeling like they were intruding into my personal space. But in about two weeks time, this will no longer be a concern. Our new offices are located in one of the best locations in Ho Chi Minh City, smack dab in the heart of District 1, down the street from the Provincial People's Committee and the famed Rex Hotel. Saigon Eco Construction is helping us to design a space that will be modern, yet modest....professional, yet simple. The space will be set-up to showcase our work in orphanages throughout Vietnam to our visitors, while also providing a comfortable space for our staff to collaborate together while they plan lessons for the children that are aimed towards inspiring them towards an interest in becoming lifelong learners. But the most exciting part of our new office space will be that it will allow us to jumpstart our expansion plan of getting computers and internet training into more orphanages in the Mekong Delta region of the Southern Vietnam. The offices will feature the space we need to begin training new teachers who will begin leading the classes in the new orphanages later this year. As soon as we were awarded the grant from the Chao Foundation/Transparent Fish Fund we knew that we wanted to utilize the funds to help start the expansion of our program into new orphanages to reach new children. Setting up the space for training our new team of teachers is the first step! Original Article was written by Tad Kincaid. On behalf of the entire Orphan Impact team based in Vietnam, I can say that we are thrilled to be joining the East Villagers community! There are so many great stories here about the creative ways small non-profit organizations are making impact in vulnerable communities around the world. As a small project working in Vietnamese orphanages, we are very aware of the challenges facing organizations with limited resources, but also know firsthand that significant good can be done on a limited budget. It is privilege to join a community of individuals and organizations who share these same challenges and understand the commitment and perseverence required in running a non-profit organizations.
We were so fortunate to be recent recipients of a generous $20,000 grant from the Chao Foundation. It will be a great joy to work in partnership with the Transparent Fish Fund/Chao Foundation throughout 2013 to bring high quality computer & internet training to orphaned children in Vietnam. Throughout the year, we hope to use this forum to share our stories - both successes and challenges - as we work to grow our project and expand from 5 orphanages and 148 participating children to 13 orphanages and more than 500 participating children. Many thanks to our new partners in the Transparents Fish Fund & Chao Foundation. Thank you for providing us with the support we needed to expand our model (a model we have been working hard to develop over the past 3 years) to reach a significant number of orphaned children in some of the most impoverished provinces of Vietnam. We are so grateful to you for your support! Original article was written by Tad Kincaid Orphan Impact has become the newest Strategic Partner with TFish Fund! They've received a $20,000 grant this year to sustain their incredible work of providing technology education to orphans in Vietnam.
